ABSTRACT

The slow emergence of threads of hybridity led to find more threads in new life in Iran. It certainly helped to get out of the scrutiny of the home and into the hurly-burly of the street. The ideal location of this became travelling by communal taxi. This chapter focuses on the individual space – within the confined and crowded space of the taxi. It also focuses on travelling by taxi on a daily basis, with the forced necessity of succeeding in the multiple observational and communicative tasks that it required. The communal taxi is an excellent reference for the concept of small culture formation on the go in that it was explicitly a transient intercultural space where people came and went and worked out how to be together in transit. The urgency, anonymity, and shared sense of task within a bounded environment made the taxi an ideal laboratory for learning.
