ABSTRACT

This chapter is about how to find the people way back to the truth. The Oxford English Dictionary named post-truth the word of the year for 2016 and defined it in terms of circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief. Politicians are getting away with more outright lies than at any time in American history. In particular, there is strong research showing that when it comes to fake political news, there is little to no backfire effect. The problem with saying that truth is relative is that the position is ambiguous. The foregoing discussion makes it clear that there is a truth and that it often matters, both for our personal and political lives. There are intellectual virtues that promote accuracy, and people interested in the path to truth should try to acquire those virtues.
