ABSTRACT

This chapter teaches how we as a society can improve our epistemic environment to make it more likely that the truth wins out. The problem-as the last section made clear-is that intellectual bridges are messy, and that results from different bridges will sometimes be inconsistent. When it comes to answering big questions, we need to build intellectual bridges and trust their results, even when they conflict with our gut intuitions. To compute an objective score, we start with a panel of experts that is sufficiently diverse in terms of country of origin, gender, etc. So, while it's certainly less than perfect, we can build intellectual bridges to provide objective evaluations. The chapter closes by explaining how the people can build the same sort of bridge to evaluate the quality and bias of news sources. There are literally hundreds of careful intellectual bridges that have been built by experts to evaluate the quality of news.
