ABSTRACT

In this chapter we adopt a positive approach towards ageing and explore how the visitor economy can make visitor experiences accessible and rewarding for older people. Our starting point is to ensure accessibility is embedded in the visitor-journey concept so that the experiences and services available are easy to access, use and enjoy. We advocate the use of touchpoints as a methodology to recognise and improve accessibility which focuses on key interactions, and how visitor mobility and flow connect the various elements of service provision in the visitor experience. We examine this in terms of two elements: travel to the destination and travel within the destination, as well as mobility for leisure in environments where people live, while also acknowledging the importance of elements of the visitor economy and their use by local residents.
