ABSTRACT

The tone can range from relationship/communication issues doled out with humor and pathos to armed and dangerous. Family dynamics outside of “normal” family units are oft en based on the same psychological and logistical power dynamics as a “typical” American family. Logan represents the antithesis of unconditional love. His relationships with his kids are all transactional. The tone of the series balances out what could veer into maudlin territory with strong performances, smart writing, humor, and grace. In Shtisel and Unorthodox, religious doctrine dictates family dynamics based on Orthodox Jewish tradition: women do not have equal rights and privileges; couples are paired with suitable “matches” toward arranged marriages; and young women are oft en married well before the age of consent in most countries. The sitcoms Chad and Ramy are also steeped in the religious backgrounds and traditions of their Muslim families.
