ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the importance of exploring the expression of metaphor beyond language, in relation to a theoretical problem raised against the CMT, namely the circularity problem. The chapter is focused on the differences and similarities that characterize the expression of metaphor in words and in pictures. Furthermore, the notion and role of perceptual incongruities in pictures is discussed, as well as notions like iconicity and arbitrariness in relation to pictorial and linguistic signs. Lastly, Deliberate Metaphor Theory is explored with respect to metaphorical deliberateness observed in images.
