ABSTRACT

This chapter explores creative metaphors. The first part of the chapter provides a classification and exemplification of different types of creative metaphors, which often correspond to different degrees of creativity. The chapter also discusses the comprehension and production of creative metaphors. With respect to the former, it is shown that creative metaphors are difficult to comprehend, though they might have an important affective value. This is related to production of creative metaphors. The chapter shows that the generation of creative metaphors can be more prevalent in certain contexts and that it resembles other creative processes. Finally, two studies that look at monolingual vs. multilingual processing of different types of creative metaphors are discussed, showing that different types of creative metaphors are processed differently and that multilinguals tend to exhibit a certain linguist flexibility during comprehension of creative metaphors.
