ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how metaphors are expressed across human languages and notes the similarities and differences that can be observed across languages and cultures. The chapter focuses on cases where different languages lexicalize similar concepts through similar linguistic expressions, and cases where different languages lexicalize similar concepts through linguistic expressions that evoke very different images. In relation to this, the issue of scarcity of resources needed for more thorough and systematic cross-linguistic research is discussed. Finally, an interesting case study that focuses on emotion-color associations across different languages is presented.
