ABSTRACT

Chapter 9, Regulating Informality: Spaces of Everyday Consumption in Riyadh, explores the informal and how the humanization initiative aimed to integrate it into a formal process thus capitalizing on the premise for urban vibrancy. The chapter is in two parts. The first develops a theoretical basis for the construct, looking at its origins and how it plays a role in furthering inclusive urbanity. The second part shifts the discussion to Riyadh where I provide an account of its informal practices, describing how the Municipality, in response, introduced a series of initiatives regulating the activity by providing a proper outlet for vendors.
