ABSTRACT

Chapter 2, Mayors and the City, reviews the extent to which mayors have found effective ways to govern their respective cities, including: Jaime Lerner (Curitiba), Enrique Penalosa (Bogotá) and Michael Bloomberg (New York City), and from the Arab region in particular, Omar Maani (Amman), Said Farsi (Jeddah) and (Riyadh). The contribution of Riyadh’s former mayor, Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, is then considered in detail, including how his background and approach enabled him to contribute to the city’s urban transformation. This is set within the wider framework of urban governance in Saudi Arabia.
