ABSTRACT

Chapter 4, Scenes from Riyadh: Spaces of Encounter and Exchange, is a photo essay in two parts. First, a historical section draws on the archives of the Royal Geographical Society and the work of Keith Wheeler and goes from the early twentieth century to the late 1970s. This is followed by the essay's main section which focuses on the contemporary city. Here the aim is to go beyond the spectacular, formal city to uncover a place that is actively used and appropriated by its inhabitants.
