ABSTRACT
Chapter 5, Riyadh’s Urban Growth and Development: A Historical Overview, is in three main sections. The first looks at the city’s origins and its early encounter with modernism. The second explores Riyadh’s urban growth and development as seen through its numerous masterplans. The third section examines the urban imaginary of Riyadh: how the city is represented in international media and how that has contributed to its perception by outsiders.
