ABSTRACT

“Kopanitsa” is a generic name for a Bulgarian dance tune with an 11-beat meter. One of the transcribers of this tune, Ivan Verimezov, is also a recognized master of Bulgarian folk music. According to Verimezov, this particular kopanitsa (which is also transliterated as kopannitza and kopanitza) is titled “Pazardzhishka.” The transcription shows the six melodies played by the full ensemble. These melodies are labeled as A, B, C, D, E, and F on page 87 of the Rice and Wilson textbook. The six melodies are heard from 0:01 to 1:06, and from 2:37 to 3:41, of the gateway recording.
