ABSTRACT

“Ketawang Puspawarna Laras Slendro Patet Manyura” is a composition for Javanese gamelan. Although the traditional repertoire of the Javanese gamelan is still often taught and learned aurally, several notation systems for the music emerged after Java came under the influence of the Dutch. The standard notation system for Central Javanese gamelan music is called kepatihan and it was developed around 1900 CE. The transcription of “Puspawarna” included here was created by Christopher J. Miller using the kepatihan system. As in all transcriptions using kepatihan notation, Miller’s score shows the balungan (the main melody, indicated with numbers) and the colotomic structure (shown using symbols placed above the numbers). However, it does not include any information about elaborating instrumental parts.
