ABSTRACT

The poem that inspired this instrumental composition was written by Wang Wei during the eighth century CE and is titled “Seeing Yuan the Second Off on a Mission to Anxi.” Here is the English translation of that poem: A morning rain has settled the dust in Weicheng By the hostel, the willows are fresh and green again Drink one more cup of wine, my friend West of Yang Pass there will be no one you know [no old friends] The tablature notation for this qin composition first appeared in 1491 CE. The notation below was hand calligraphed by qin master Tsar Teh-Yun and appears in Yung and Chor-wah 2000:99–104.
