ABSTRACT

The most dramatic and potentially most destructive events associated with water are hurricanes or cyclones. In October, Hurricane Hazel formed in the tropics, stalked through the interior of the United States, and crossed over the Great Lakes. If climate scientists are correct, storms we face in the future may confound us even more in many places and become even less predictable as Hazel was in Canada. In recent years, debate over the impact of climate change on the frequency and size of hurricanes/cyclones has been fierce. The Hurricane Relief Fund, private donations from big companies such as Ford Motor Company, and smaller ones, such as Laura Secord Candy Shops, and aid from churches helped the cause. Hurricane Hazel may have been an unpredictable event for Toronto and environs, but maybe we need new and more comprehensive contingency measures to help us survive such events.
