ABSTRACT

Why should teachers integrate content into the literacy block? First, teachers simply don’t have the time necessary to teach everything! We propose that if we create units driven by content and integrated with literacy, instruction is more meaningful for students (and teachers!). Second, when teachers try to integrate instruction but don’t use content-driven integration, lessons can be ineffective and unproductive for the students. We introduce strategies to correct common misconceptions about unit integration and imagine what this can look like in the elementary classroom.
