ABSTRACT

How do teachers develop students’ literacy through thematic units to learn and communicate content? They focus on the essential components of writing, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary which all help strengthen students’ ability to communicate. In this chapter, we describe how to review grade-level standards and student assessment data to develop holistic literacy goals that can be taught through the content (science, social studies, and mathematics). Finally, we provide examples of what this may look like in a classroom.
