ABSTRACT

How do teachers support students’ reading comprehension? We begin this chapter by first describing an interactive model for thinking about text comprehension that can help teachers support readers in accessing challenging texts. Next, we describe how to analyze texts to identify what is challenging about a text, and then use that analysis to determine which scaffolding techniques will help readers overcome those specific text challenges. Building upon the write-to-learn strategies we introduced in the previous chapter, we present additional comprehension scaffolds and examples of how to support readers in understanding grade-appropriate, content texts through both read alouds and independent reading.
