ABSTRACT

How do teachers support vocabulary development through an interdisciplinary unit? We begin this chapter by describing how children learn words and the implications of this research on vocabulary instruction. We then provide examples of text-based vocabulary techniques that can assist students in understanding and developing discipline-specific vocabulary while reading. Next, we share additional vocabulary techniques that can help support children in seeing relationships between a set of content-related words. Then we share steps for developing vocabulary lessons and provide examples of this process. We close out this chapter by making note of how vocabulary can be explored and learned across other content areas.
