ABSTRACT

How do teachers support students’ oral language development related to texts in interdisciplinary units? In this chapter, we first lay a foundation for the importance of talk for learning and literacy development. Next, we share specific instructional practices that will foster oral language development, comprehension of texts, and support students as writers, providing examples of how to embed talk into the lessons we have created in the book thus far. Then, we provide specific examples of discourse strategies in science, social studies, and math. We end with an example of an interdisciplinary lesson plan that supports language development in literacy and the content areas.
