ABSTRACT
Trusteeship is an extremely important concept that underlies philanthropy. In this chapter, I trace the influence of Gandhi on JRD’s idea of trusteeship. After discussing the details of Gandhi’s view on trusteeship, we see how JRD implemented this idea in the Tata companies and how he professionalised trusteeship so that it is not dependent on an individual’s whims.
