ABSTRACT

This chapter revisits some educational approaches to radio training which may contribute to the ‘lightbulb moment’ of raised consciousness and empowerment. Challenging romanticism is central to community development where there is a notion of community as a socially solid entity where people love and understand each other and have similar aspirations. The reality of development is fraught with the intersections of oppression and with anxieties, but strengthened by resilience, love and laughter. Intersectionality is intentionally constructed in this oppositional way, causing women to experience internal conflicts about confronting their oppression. The community radio station provides a space in which feelings and ideas are encouraged and respected. Manchester goes on to discuss how community radio organisations create a unique learning culture which is very different to school and the negative experiences of so many. Silence is what allowed predators to rampage through the decades unchecked.
