ABSTRACT

This chapter moves from women’s silence to their analysis of empowerment through radio activism. The success of women working and learning together to challenge oppression is well documented in academic and practical disciplines. The group’s rationale for participating in this project was to spread the word about the value of women joining the radio movement. A plethora of literatures from an array of disciplines and professions consider the meaning of empowerment and its relevance to real life. The notion of empowerment through the vehicle of relationships and solidarity is not new to the varied disciplines of mental health, social work, psychology and development. Radio creates a space for women ‘to make meaning of the events of their lives’. The process is based on dialogue; it works with cultural forms that are familiar to participants; in other words it is based upon an agenda and definitions determined by participants, not by workers or researchers.
