ABSTRACT

The epigram is imagined as the Sankofa bird that moves forward whilst looking backwards, carrying an egg, to represent the future. The concept, used in community development, is more than a symbol as it embodies the philosophy of the Akan people that reflection is essential. This chapter brings together some lessons learned on a journey which began well before redundancy in 2009. It is the culmination of more than thirty years in various voluntary and paid roles, which have aimed to understand and challenge structural oppression. In the increasingly right-wing, privatised, arguably corruptly governed UK, resistance is in the unwritten job description of community, youth, health, media, education, social and development workers and ad infinitum. This journey reflects how micro resistance may produce insights and teachings for far-reaching reform.
