ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to control monitoring and measuring (MM) devices. It describes the role of quality assurance manager and supervisors. The responsibility of the quality assurance manager is: to establish a calibration programme which shall include calibration methods; acceptance criteria and standards to be used, determine (if required) that devices are in the inventory; and order, fabricate and authorise the use of employee-owned or customer required devices. MM devices should be capable of making the measurements required with sufficient resolution to detect the expected increments. Fitness for purpose is achieved through calibration, verification, preventive and reactive maintenance, repairs, visual inspection for damage and deterioration, automatic replacement at the end of lifespan, repeatability and reproducibility studies, and statistical analysis of measurement deviation. QA Manager should maintain records relating to calibration, repeatability and reproducibility.
