ABSTRACT

In this chapter, educators consider the nuances in facilitating conversations, allowing learners to express their everyday ideas while learning about the scientific views. Participants read and discuss ways to approach the tension between everyday ideas and scientific views, how power relations affect learning, and the nature of family conversations in informal science environments. Participants engage in a hands-on demonstration designed to set up the opportunity to analyze Educator Moves focused on teaching purposes and approaches to facilitating discussions. They apply their understanding of facilitation approaches to their practice, thinking about their teaching purposes and how they’ll allow for the sharing of multiple ideas while guiding learners to a more accurate understanding of the scientific idea. Learning science requires understanding the scientific views and speaking the language of science, which educators need to model for learners.
