ABSTRACT

This chapter examines facilitating conversations to support learning in actual practice. Participants revisit two research discussions on learning and talk to deepen their understanding of the importance of talk for learning. This rereading of text also primes participants for the upcoming Video Reflections. They’re introduced to Educator Moves for learning conversations, and practice using the moves during a whole-group observation of video from a volunteer presenter. Finally, discussions of observation data and the Video Reflection experience as a whole reinforce how educators can facilitate learning conversations in their activities and programs. Consider inviting a member of the community to be the guide during the Video Reflection. Doing so offers members of the community leadership opportunities. Participants might bring up obstacles due to logistics and equipment. Some of those concerns might be better addressed in Continue the Learning as they prepare for the next round of Video Reflections in small groups.
