ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the Supreme Court’s definition of obscenity and reveals why government enforcement efforts have shifted to target sexual material depicting children. The emergence of “revenge porn” is described along with recent legislation designed to punish the dissemination of those sexual images lacking the consent of the depicted individuals. Indecency, a topic of great interest to broadcast regulators in the early 2000s, is also analyzed. Finally, the chapter explores methods employed to control nonobscene sexual expression.
