ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the triple role of assistant music producer Manuel Jorge Veloso as producer, presenter and musician. It also covers the inception of one of the most significant television jazz series in Portugal: TV JAZZ. Given its didactic component and its strong visual impact, TV JAZZ soon became a cult series for Portuguese amateur musicians. Through an analysis of the presenter scripts, this chapter reveals how Jorge Veloso developed an increasingly sophisticated discourse. This serves to reinforce his importance and his influence in bringing his political, cultural and aesthetic commitments to television jazz production. TV JAZZ was also the vehicle through which the renowned North American television series Jazz Scene USA was broadcast in full in Portugal.
