ABSTRACT

The Coda focuses on Jorge Veloso’s departure from RTP and covers the period from early 1971 to April 25, 1974, a period in which television jazz production dwindled substantially. This chapter addresses the reasons for this and analyses Manuel Jorge Veloso’s on- and off-stage jazz activities: as a music producer in the Portuguese record industry and a drummer in Dexter Gordon’s Quartet at the first edition of the International Cascais Jazz Festival (FIJC). During this period, Luís Villas-Boas became the face of jazz on RTP with his televising of the FIJC (1971–1973). The complex negotiations surrounding the FIJC are examined, taking into account the political framework of the time and changes occurring within the Portuguese jazz scene.
