ABSTRACT
“Live! Live on Air” focuses primarily on televised performances from the Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (RTP) studios, featuring Portuguese jazz musicians connected to the Lisbon scene as well as, occasionally, foreign musicians. Each programme was produced as a televised planned event, introducing Portuguese viewers to live sessions featuring large ensembles led by the Brazilian Edison Marinho and Jorge Costa Pinto. Exclusive interview material from Costa Pinto reveals first-hand the studio experience at the time, along with insights about rehearsals, highlighting connections with the capital’s jazz scene and with the Hot Clube de Portugal. This chapter also discusses the appearance in the RTP studios of the African-American singer June Richmond.
