ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we look at the differences between people in stories and people in the real world and what it takes to build a good fictional character. By looking at examples of Chinese creative writing textbooks and Frank O’Connor’s The Lonely Voice, I see two different approaches to creating characters. I discuss how this split plays out in stories and then give a set of different creative writing activities for improving characters in fiction.
