ABSTRACT

The 1970s were the years when Arden and D’Arcy’s collaboration was probably at its strongest. In 1972 the ‘Troubles’ were responsible for 467 violent deaths on the island of Ireland as well as for 3148 people injured. Fanon suggested that ‘liberation’ must be led by the peasants and outcasts – in Ireland, that is, the rural communities which D’Arcy had been speaking about. The reason for this, according to Fanon, was that colonialism – and by implication the kind of neo-colonialism which it could be said Ireland was suffering from at this time – was ultimately a matter of class. In the spring of 1973, Arden and D’Arcy were invited to become jointly Regents Lecturer at the University of California, Davis, for one term. The University was apprised of D’Arcy and Arden’s increasing involvement in ongoing struggles.
