ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses diverse forms of citizen participation in post-Fukushima antinuclear movements. Three sites are of particular interest for discourse analysis. The first is the large and regular demonstrations that took place in metropolises, particularly in Tokyo. The second is an occupy-style encampment in front of the METI building. The final site is the protests that occurred in front of the Ōi Nuclear Power Plant over the restart of a reactor after two months of the first nuclear-free period Japan experienced since the 1960s. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the implications these protests have for Japan’s civic society.
