ABSTRACT

This chapter charts the history of criminology both globally and within Ireland. The first half of the chapter focuses on the development of criminology in the UK and US, the two countries which had the most significant impact on the emergence of criminology in Ireland and globally. The second half presents a history of criminology in Ireland. As criminology was a late bloomer in Ireland, the chapter concludes by reviewing crime trends in Ireland to argue that the lack of government support for criminological research, and minimal academic interest in crime, may reflect both actual and perceived crime rates.
