ABSTRACT

In the late 1800s and early 20th century, several early management and leadership theorists carried out rigorous research into human behavior. Based on this research, these theorists, many of whom were psychologists, offered profoundly valuable insights into individual, and group, work behaviors. These insights are still valid today. Unfortunately, the more contemporary leadership theories either include only a superficial element of the early theories or ignore them altogether. This chapter outlines some of the most significant ideas and theories put forward by those early theorists.
