ABSTRACT
Some populations of rhesus monkeys inhabit Indian temples located in urban areas, some inhabit dense forests, and some inhabit American psychology laboratories. The psychological development of those raised in temples is different from those raised in forests or laboratories. Genetic evolution and learning are the two major ways that members of a species become adapted to a particular environment. The first is the ability of a population of a species to survive and reproduce in a given environment. Second, the greater the learning ability of a species, the greater will be the flexibility of its adaptation. Social structure refers to the relatively stable ways that the members of a culture are organized to carry out the functions of their society, e.g., marrying, selecting political leaders, getting food. The socialization issues revolve around conflicts and jealousies among daughters-in-law concerning rights, duties, and privileges; among sons concerning their leadership of and contribution to the well-being of the family.
