ABSTRACT

The case studies in this section illustrate the temporal dimension of the notions of cultural heritage and cultural sustainability that were discussed in the previous chapter. These are clearly expressed in the general investigations of ethnomusicology and of ICH, and also in the specific examples of original ecology folksong and scales. All four examples demonstrate the backward-looking view to non-tangible aspects of the cultural heritage of past societies. At the same time, they demonstrate the forward-looking view based on preserving these cultural artefacts and continuing to present them to contemporary and future society. While this temporal dimension can be seen in all aspects of sustainability, including the environmental, economic, and social aspects, it is most clearly situated in cultural sustainability where it forms an essential feature.
