ABSTRACT

The four case studies in this chapter focus on the intersections between music and sustainability in the area of social sustainability, the final pillar of the classic ‘three-pillar model’. Social sustainability is concerned with establishing and maintaining the conditions in society that support human well-being in all its forms, from the well-being of individuals to the well-being of humanity as a whole, and everything in between. This could include, for instance, the role of music in promoting inclusion, bridging isolation, developing cross-cultural understandings, and valuing diversity and tolerance. The examples given in this chapter demonstrate some ideas for the ways in which music can be used to achieve these aims, and they can suggest further possibilities.
