ABSTRACT
The essentialist paradigm has a universalist conviction with respect to gender identity, with only a minor awareness of the possibility of any exception. Gender is not simply responsible for inscribing itself upon the real sexed body, although this seems to be the central claim made from within the social constructionist perspective. Whereas identity was a truth procedure discovered by the social constructionist perspective to be dormant within the essentialist perspective, language is an innovation of the social constructionist perspective used to analyze the citational practices of essentialism. The progressive position of queer theory, found in gender-queer is not the fluidity of gender but rather the fraudulence of gender as a linguistic construction. Minimally, the way to read this formula is as follows: gender ‘interprets’ the sexed body. Sex interrupts, resists, disrupts gender. The right vector moving from sex to gender implies interruption.
