ABSTRACT

The production of a festival or event is a project. This chapter examines how the process of project management can be employed in event settings. In doing so, it identifies and describes the sequential stages through which event projects move from concept to their conclusion: initiation, planning, implementation, event and closure. In examining these stages, those project management tools relevant to each will be identified and discussed. Key among these are work breakdown structures, Gantt charts, production schedules, run sheets and checklists. Additionally, the role of the event manual as a key reference document is explored. The chapter concludes with commentary on the use of software as a means of facilitating the event project management process, and a case study, ‘Project management lessons from the Fyre Festival’, showcasing how it would have benefited from a stronger engagement with this process.
