ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to highlight a number of concerns and thoughts about how deception research is or ought to be conducted. We reflect on the inherent difficulties of studying deception detection such as the problem of capturing authentic lies, the lack of control over the lies that are used as stimuli in lie detection studies, and concerns about the ecological validity of laboratory studies. We then consider issues that affect psychological science more broadly such as the reproducibility of research, the importance of theoretical research in an applied research domain, and questions about generalisability across cultures.
