ABSTRACT

The psychology behind making games pertains to having a user experience (UX) mindset. It means developing a system or service by adopting the perspective of the end users at every step of the process. Human factors psychology is the field used to anticipate how people, with their human capabilities and limitations, will interact with a product and the pleasure this interaction will elicit. Game UX is about ensuring that a game will be usable (easy to use) and engaging (fun). This chapter proposes a game UX framework and ingredients to crafting fun games. It also explains the scientific method used to verify if the audience has the experience intended with the game and, if not, determine what needs to be fixed in priority. Game UX is a mindset whose main objective is to ensure players will have fun, and feel respected and included. It’s about placing players first.
