ABSTRACT

Having a UX mindset when developing games means placing players at the center of the process, not the business. However, making games is a hard endeavor, and business goals certainly need to be met. It’s thus important to understand the ethics behind making games and establish what lines should not be crossed so that games can always be respectful of players. Striving to offer the best experience possible to gamers entails identifying and avoiding dark patterns, not falling into the attention economy, and paying attention to the moral values conveyed by the game. The subject of ethics is a delicate topic, and things are rarely black or white. This chapter proposes to explore a few aspects of game ethics through the lens of UX.
