ABSTRACT

The conclusion considers the significant developments that have occurred throughout the last century across British Antarctic literature for children. The potential for further research is highlighted, specifically comparative research contrasting representations of the Antarctic within other national literary traditions, as well as the scope for further research regarding whaling literature and the lives of child whalers. The growth in environmental themes in children’s Antarctic literature is noted but so is the continuing investment in the idea of the Antarctic as a malevolent wilderness and the essentially ‘ecophobic’ nature of much contemporary writing about the continent.
