ABSTRACT

Weber’s analysis begins with a discussion of the Judaeo-Christian world view and, in particular, the influence of ancient Judaism upon ancient Christianity. The latter’s salvation paths – through a savior and through faith – are discussed in respect to their effects upon conduct. Comparisons to the religions of China and India are explored throughout.

However, Weber’s analysis focuses not only upon a world view and two world religions. He calls attention also to the singularity and wide impact of the ancient Western city and to central features of ancient Roman law. Weber’s attention to the ways in which the West appeared unique is apparent even in this era. A distinct “rationalism” is evident.
