ABSTRACT

The modern state, Weber maintains, found its origins in the Middle Ages. Aspects of Western feudalism and patrimonialism played distinct roles, as did “juristic rationalism” and the bourgeoisie. Also important were the bureaucratic form of rulership and Logical-formal law. Hence, Weber’s multi-causal mode of analysis is again apparent, as is his cognizance, as discussed in separate sections, of empirical variations – namely, the American and German states.
