ABSTRACT

Sexual behaviour is of great importance because our sexual impulses are strong, because they are so closely connected with the future of the race, and because very violent feelings of jealousy and rage are closely connected with them. But sex is not, of itself, either mysterious or dirty, magical or disgusting. All the evidence goes to show that these conceptions are not “natural to any decent man” but due to bad traditions and faulty training. Once the subject is faced in a straightforward way and the mind cleared of notions about unnamable offences and unforgivable sins, it becomes clear that sexual morality, though always important, is only a part of morality in general. Sexual systems must then be judged by their results and by their results alone. Most people will agree that a very important result is the production of enough healthy children to maintain the existence and well-being of the group.
