ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the intersections of knowledge and knowing that exist in the United States. It continues with an overview of trauma research related to learning, including the ACE study, how trauma disrupts centers of learning, and epigenetics. The author proposes expanding the definition of working with trauma to include eight Points of Entry. One of these points is Settling and Expanding, a pathway to the state of internal calm necessary for students to access their higher learning centers.

This chapter concludes by introducing the connection between educational trauma and ability to learn. Educational trauma undermines students’ belief in themselves as learners, and strengthening ability to learn is a way for adult students to rediscover and reclaim that belief and confidence.
